Angela Hansen’s comments on the jury process for this exhibit:
Overall, I was pleased to see such a varied and strong use of the encaustic medium while conveying personal voice and narrative with many thought-provoking and skillfully made pieces. I was especially happy to see such a variety of other materials and mediums integrated with encaustic. My selection of works for the Global Warming is Real exhibition was based upon three criteria: skillful use and application of the primary medium of encaustic, the artist’s ability to convey their intended meaning or story, and finally, composition and visual flow of the work.
One of the most amazing qualities of encaustic is the variety of applications and techniques available to the artist, from traditional painting to sculpture to assemblage and there were many works that showed a masterful and unique use of the medium. Pieces selected for this exhibition used technique combined with a compelling allegory and, as a whole, will make for an interesting and thoughtful exhibition.
I would like to congratulate all who submitted work for this show as making art is a very personal endeavour and to put yourself “out there” requires courage. Whether your works were selected or not, please keep creating and making what brings you joy – I believe that is what truly drives our creative souls. Artists have a role in society to bring awareness and attention to issues – we even have the opportunity to teach through our work, and maybe, just maybe, change some minds for the better.
