Artist Statement:
Living in the desert has increased my climate change concerns especially with increased drought, devastating fires and disappearing animal habitat. I have always gathered bits and pieces of objects that evoke a memory that triggers a sense of time and place. The beauty and treachery of nature has become increasingly prominent in my work. Fragile flowers, thorns, pods, bones and creatures are preserved in wax to draw attention to these small remnants of our world. Most people are not aware of how co-dependent all living creatures are and how climate change effects everything.
This mixed media piece is constructed from gourds that I grew and dried then sliced in half. The mummified creatures and dried materials are encased in encaustic wax and placed into wooden boxes so that they become shrines or resurrected scenarios of the world today. The piece portrays a mystery that I hope invites the viewer to join in their own search for what remains and what is important in preserving our world.
