Artist Statement:
Plastic is everywhere, virtually unavoidable in our modern daily life. Like most of our garbage, it ends up in the oceans and waterways, destroying marine life. By 2025, the ocean is projected to contain around one ton of plastic for every three tons of fish. By 2050, there will be more plastic than fish by weight (source: theworldcounts.com).
This work starts with an abstract encaustic monotype of the sea. A wash of copper ink represents the toxic chemicals humans release into our water and sashiko stitching symbolizes how we perceive ourselves as living in our own bubbles, yet in reality, we are all interconnected.
