Artist Statement:

Anthropocene, the title of this piece, refers to a period in time in which humanity has affected the Earth’s climate. Global weather patterns are becoming increasingly extreme with record-breaking heat waves and earlier, more intense hurricane seasons. Rising sea levels caused by melting polar ice caps are contributing to loss of species and habitable land in countries that are the least able to adapt. Two new studies released in July 2024 suggest that the melting glacial ice is slowing the Earth’s rotation and impacting fluids deep in the center of the planet, suggesting that human behavior is altering Earth to its literal core.

The substrate for the encaustic is a corroded and burned out firepit with an empty void in the middle which seemed to accurately represent the state of our planet.
