THEME

Global Warming is REAL: Efforts Inspired by Global Warming Changes

Broaden the Conversation

As scientific reports and photographs reveal changes in our planet’s atmosphere, we become increasingly aware of how global warming impacts us both now and in the future. We are also seeing a rise in positive initiatives aimed at reducing pollution, protecting endangered plants and animals, and mitigating the warming effects on our oceans. Earth Day serves as a perfect example of how one person’s efforts in 1969 sparked a conversation that led to a movement focused on addressing the harmful actions taken that affect our planet. You can observe the positive impact of Earth Day from its inception to the present. As awareness of both the challenges we face and the efforts to combat them grows, we encourage artists to draw inspiration from the urgency of educating others about this important theme, as well as from the excitement and relief brought about by the innovative efforts to preserve our magnificent planet impacting past and now.

There are no specific limitations on expression; however, your artwork should be contemporary, created using wax-based media, and related to the theme of the exhibit. The core of this exhibition will be a creative interpretation of your thoughts and feelings on this subject expressed through art. The juror will select works based on how well they interpret the “Global Warming is REAL” theme and the overall quality of the submitted artwork.

JUROR – TAMI PHELPS

Tami Phelps is an Alaskan cold wax artist who believes artists have the opportunity, and quite possibly the responsibility, to take action through art with stories, knowledge, and passion about the crisis of global warming on our planet.

Growing up, she lived in diverse environments, including the plains of Nebraska, Black Hills of South Dakota, mountains of Colorado, deserts of Arizona, tropics of Hawaii, and the Alaska subarctic. It has become surreal to revisit these locations and experience their dramatic changes in her lifetime.

Most of Tami’s cold wax paintings are based on concepts and storytelling. They are often inspired by the surrealism of Salvador Dali’s art. Tami is also influenced by Dr. Maria Montessori’s cultural curriculum of the hands-on studies of air, land, and water, and her teachings of respect for self, others, and the environment. Sixteen years ago, Tami retired from a 20-year teaching career in a public Montessori school in Anchorage, Alaska, and is now a full-time artist.

Tami has exhibited her award-winning artwork on national and international stages. Some of these include EAI Global Warming exhibitions, the London Art Biennale 2023, and the preeminent report on climate change in the United Statesthe 2023 National Climate Assessment Report—with her artwork heading the chapter on climate change in Alaska. Additional information about her Conceptual Nature art collection and much more can be found on her website, tamiphelps.com. Be sure to watch Tami’s video, which can be found here.

Tami learns from and appreciates other artists who challenge her to reach beyond what makes her feel comfortable. Bring it!

“I dreamt of painting with light bulbs in a ‘kiddy pool’ as if they were sidewalk chalk sticks. My water-top painting dream haunted me, inspiring reflection on my waking concerns about our planet’s confrontation with the surreal nightmare of climate change that will not wake up on its own.”

— Tami Phelps

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS & DETAILS:

  • This exhibition is open to all artists working in wax media (encaustic & cold wax) whether they are members of EAI or not. All forms of encaustic/wax are acceptable media to submit for consideration by the juror – including hot (encaustic) or cold wax, and encaustic mixed media – as long as wax is a key component.
  • All artwork must be for sale – and remain eligible for sale – from the time the entry is submitted (May 24 through July 28) and if an artwork is selected by the juror – until the close of the exhibition (November 2).

  • Size restrictions on the original artwork submitted to the juror:
      • 2-D artwork must be 24 x 24 inches equivalent (or under)
      • 3-D artwork must be 20 x 20 inches equivalent (or under)
  • Commission Fee for this juried exhibition: 50% to the artist/50% to Encaustic Art Institute.
  • Entry Fee: $30 for Encaustic Art Institute members/$35 for non-EAI members, payable within your EntryThingy entry, via PayPal or credit card, or you may send a check to EAI.

  • Entrants may opt to only participate in the online portion of the exhibition, in that case you will not ship your work to us, your work and statement will be posted online and a jpeg will be posted in place of your piece in the in-person exhibit, and if sold, the artist will ship directly to the buyer.

  • Entrants who are shipping their work for the in-person portion of the exhibition must supply a prepaid return shipping label  included with the accepted artwork for the return of the work, if not sold. No exceptions.
      • Details on shipping to us, and the process to ship work to buyer will be posted on the website (from the dropdown menu under the Call for Art) after juror notification emails have been sent.
      • Click HERE to find the label to affix to the back or bottom of the work you ship to us.
  • A statement describing how your entry addresses the theme (50 words minimum – 250 words maximum) is required as part of your entry. Please do take the time to write a statement that adequately expresses how your work relates to the theme. For the juror, and for many viewers/buyers, this is an important element of the exhibition. The artwork should be visually compelling on its own. However, providing context regarding how the piece relates to the theme is essential for both the juror and viewers, especially for non-representational work. Artist statements will accompany the artwork in both the online and in-person exhibits.
      • Note: There is a field to submit your statement in the EntryThingy system, however, EntryThingy limits what they will accept for statements to a maximum of 530 characters (approximately 100 words)  – we will accept up to 250 words. If the length of your statement is longer than what EntryThingy allows, type in “statement sent separately” in the field where EntryThingy requests your statement. Then you will email your separate statement(s) to  eainm.info@gmail.com, as noted below.
      • Email your text as a Word doc or Pages document (do not send PDF files).
      • If you are submitting more than one artwork, you may send a separate statement for each piece. Be sure to note your entry number and the image ID (provided by EntryThingy) and/or the title of each piece. Each statement (if you’re sending for more than one piece) should be no less than 50 words or more than 250 words in length and should absolutely NOT include any identifying personal information, as all entries are to be submitted anonymously to the juror. Statements sent separately from the EntryThingy entry must be received no later than midnight on July 28 when entries close.
  • There will be an online component to the exhibit consisting of the jpegs submitted in the entries. Please be mindful when editing your jpegs to submit. Choose the best quality images possible to represent your work to the public (as well as to the juror).
      • Image specifications: Entrants may submit two (2) artworks (as high-resolution jpegs) with the option to submit additional detail/close-up views of the artwork depicted in the 2 primary images for consideration by the juror. We suggest the images be saved at 300 dpi as the resolution. (Minimum acceptable dpi: 150). Image dimensions: 1500 px  as the longest dimension. File size up to 10 MB.

  • Ensure that the email address you use in your entry is a current address you actively monitor. If you use a different name for any reason in any part of your entry (e.g. you use a legal name on your entry but you go by an “artist name”) or  the address/name associated with a PayPal account or credit card you use for your entry fee is different from your own – be sure to let us know (Mehrens@eainm.com or eainm.info@gmail.com).

      EDITING OR CHANGING YOUR ENTRY:

If at any point after you have submitted your entry through EntryThingy (but before the closing date for entries), you realize you need to edit or adjust anything in your entry, contact eainm.info@gmail.com with your request to change the status of your entry. We will set your entry to “unsubmitted,” allowing you to return to EntryThingy and make your edits. No changes may be made after entries close. Be sure to complete the entry process with enough time to contact us to change the status to allow you to make any edits. Entries close at midnight on July 28, but support is only available until 5 pm (so you must contact us BEFORE 5 pm MDT July 28 for edits). When you’re finished, submit your entry to complete the process.

If you are editing an entry and have already paid your entry fee on the original submission, but the system will only allow you to submit your revised entry if you pay your fee again, contact us and we will refund the second fee.

See the note below about the confirming/editing deadline if you need to edit any details once entries have closed.
