Artist Statement:

In this painting commemorating the catastrophic flooding of July 4, 2025, the artist creates an imagined landscape of the Texas Hill Country with an abstracted reference to the boats and helicopter rescues that saved many lives that day. 

Both the extent of the flooding as well as the number of lives lost—many of them children attending Camp Mystic—imprinted the tragedy on the collective consciousness. There was resilience: many rescues were made by helicopter (800) and boat. And in the aftermath of this Texas trauma, many changes were put into place. Yet there was deep emotional pain experienced by parents of children and families of loved ones lost.

The results of climate change are difficult for those who must experience them–particularly when unexpected situations, such as this, arise.
