Artist Statement:

Hope Springs Eternal, so they say, but maybe the optimal word is “Spring” when growth is rekindled and seeds open to their destiny. It is the world waking up and optimism returns—as do the bees.

I am always heartened to see and hear the return of the bees each Spring. Knowing the hardships they face makes their return that much more sweet. Knowing that we need them causes me to do what I can for them, put out water, plant flowers and trees they love, like datura and peaches. Knowing these small resilient creatures have survived another season gives me reason for hope that the whole web of nature is strong enough.

This encaustic painting reflects my conviction that despite the warming, melting environment we now inhabit, nature draws energy and vitality from deeper sources than we can know. These sources could be called divine, spiritual or simply, biological, but I believe nature tends toward regeneration and restoration. Our planet has undergone near total destruction many times over and yet we live in beauty and abundance.

From a human perspective there is much to worry about and our own actions lead us toward destruction, maybe even extinction, but nature itself will regenerate. We don’t know the forms that will emerge or time required for a new, full ecosystem but I believe that life itself cannot be extinguished.
