Artist Statement:
I have to admit, finding anything positive regarding climate warming, where extended drought conditions have increased forest fires, challenged my current concern over this devastation. Yet, the focus of this exhibit is titled “Resilience which prompted me to do more research regarding “how” these disasters were being handled. Because of the advanced methods we as humans have developed, numerous methods are now employed. I did not realize that Nature itself initiates regrowth using pioneer species that can sprout within weeks. Various land agencies employ specialized stabilization with replanting to help rebuild tree canopies. The Burned Area Emergency Response organization has teams that mitigate flash floods, prevent topsoil erosion, and help protect water infrastructure. In addition, human intervention clears land to harvest seed sources after megafires. Pine cones grow seeds in nurseries and are replanted in the above-mentioned deforested zones. My realization resulting from this exercise is that we humans are full of abilities to preserve our environment, and the “resilience” we innately have will help save the planet.
