Artist Statement:
Nature’s Alchemy – Purple Dream is one of three sculptural vessels from my playful series Future Ecology Specimens in Hybrid Adaptation. Rather than depicting environmental change literally, this work imagines a speculative future where land and sea have entwined, giving rise to new forms of resilience.
Created with encaustic, repurposed freshwater pearl beads, cotton, shellac, and copper leaf, the vessel appears as though collected from an unknown ecology – a rare ingredient or remedy drawn equally from reef and bush, ocean and earth. It suggests a medicine chest for futures in repair, where adaptation and regeneration continue to unfold.
My practice is usually grounded in observations of Australia’s natural environment, yet this work embraces imagination. Scientific discovery has always begun with the courage to imagine what does not yet exist, and speculative thinking can reveal hopeful possibilities for ecological renewal.
Nature has an amazing capacity to adapt, regenerate, and evolve despite humanity’s profound impact. While many ecosystems remain under pressure, growing efforts in conservation, restoration, and environmental stewardship demonstrate our increasing commitment to repairing what has been damaged. This work acknowledges both realities: nature’s enduring resilience and our responsibility to support its recovery. Nature’s Alchemy – Purple Dream offers a humble vision of optimism – a small vessel carrying the possibility that, through care, knowledge and respect, future ecologies may not only endure but flourish.
