Artist Statement:
Over the past ten years, global warming has caused shorter, warmer winters and loss of forests to fires. Winter has been losing the beauty of ice and snow-covered trees.
Record-setting low temperatures and heavy snowfalls in the Northeast in the winter of 2026 inspired this work, “Winter’s Veil.” The technique I used was a tissue paper burn of an underpainting to produce a charred surface that was the template for producing an image of ice- and snow-laden trees. I view this technique as a metaphor for the renewal of charred forests that can be achieved through the ingenuity of humankind and the resilience of nature. Under our stewardship, we can preserve the beauty of winter.
