Artist Statement:
One of my favorite parts of beekeeping is pulling out a frame and seeing the vast variety of pollen colors. This one shows an abundance of red and orange pollen along with quite a few green cells. I have an ongoing series focusing on these beautiful images that I call “Pollen Medley”. I use both the photos that I take of these frames along with encaustic I make from the beeswax to create these works. The photo is adhered to a wooden block, and then I paint on top, loving how the wax melts and reforms until I’m satisfied with the result. I often paint the edges for a complete, finished look. The honey bees and the pollen variety are a perfect example of resilience in these times of global warming, where the environment is in danger.
