Artist Statement:
Memories of spending many girlhood hours exploring the wooded bird sanctuary near my home in South Africa linger. As for many artists, nature has been a sanctuary and an inspiration to me for as long as I can remember. This is evidenced in many of my mixed media works.
In the United States, visual artists, writers, and composers, from Georgia O’Keeffe to Henry David Thoreau, to Mary Oliver, and Aaron Copland, have found inspiration and solace in nature. Individuals from all social strata have sought sanctuary from the daily grind in nature’s beauty.
The magnificence of nature is only temporarily disturbed by humanity’s follies. Mother Earth is resilient. She continues to create vast displays such as those of our blue planet floating in space that astronauts describe, sunsets and sunrises, the aurora borealis, lightning and thunder, waterspouts and dust devils — down to minutiae, like the iridescence on a tiny beetle’s belly. In the darkest of times, nature consoles us if we make time to be with her.
“Even as the birds sing tumultuously, and glance by with fresh and brilliant plumage, so now is Nature’s grandest voice heard, and her sharpest flashes seen.”
— Henry David Thoreau
