Artist Statement:

Looking Beyond is an exploration of Earth’s ever-transforming coastal edge. Here, an intertidal tango is underway, giving rise to the ocean’s dynamic equilibrium. Balance exists in light of these extremes, helping acclimatize between the turbulence and tranquility. This rhythmic exchange of giving and taking, building up and scraping back, is a flow that is both grounding and intrinsically familiar to my process.  

What looks like a transient moment plays out iteratively over millennia. This geologic endurance stands in marked contrast to the immediacy of my studio process, where I use fast-setting construction plaster to form ridges and carve contours in a bas-relief style. This porous, tactile landscape allows for dozens of layers of encaustic wax, each torch-fused for luminosity.

Born from a search for light amidst the weighty currents we face ecologically and societally, Looking Beyond is an invitation to stand at the shoreline and find steadiness in the flow. It is a study of resilience, a reminder of our adaptability, collective strength, and hope on the horizon.
