Artist Statement:
Climate change, overfishing, and loss of habitat are just a few of the factors putting penguins at risk. The penguin in The Rescue, a gentoo, is considered one of the more adaptable members of the species. These penguins have modified certain behaviors in response to climate change by breeding earlier, expanding their territory as sea ice changes, and changing their diet as warming waters alter available food. The title reflects the penguins’ self-rescue since continuing to thrive relies on their own instincts and adaptive behavior. The heavy snow reminds viewers that even in compatible climate, life is far from easy. While the gentoos’ resilience amid change gives hope, other species of penguins, such as the Emperor Penguin, are at risk of extinction.
