Artist Statement:
There are wind turbines on the small uninhabited island near where I live. The island is owned by an indigenous organization that installed them. I enjoy their quiet, resilient performance when I fly over them. Energy from the earth’s wind there feeds into a local electrical company’s grid, providing sustainable, non-polluting energy to homes and businesses. This occurs not only where I live but around the world. My cold wax art submission, “Earth’s Breath,” portrays confronting global warming with renewable energy sources like wind, which allows our Earth to heal itself. 21% of air on our planet is made by from the trees, algae, grasses and more of Earth. In my art piece, I press-traced a tri-leaf mint herb leaf from our small herb garden for cooking to make the three wings of a wind turbine. Underground are plant roots that allow our earth to give us the air needed to make power that clean technology uses to alter our trajectory downward into global warming. Hope is rising from earth itself. Such a renewable energy source, combined with solar, hydro, thermal, and other clean energy sources, offers hope for climate change.
