Artist Statement:

After Helene flooded the New River, near my house, it occurred to me there are smaller, shy creatures that have been affected. Bog turtles are one of the smallest turtle species in the world, and the smallest in North America. The bog turtle was listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act in 1997. As climate change continues to create dramatic fluctuations in weather patterns, flooding, extreme heat and cold, wildlife habitats will be dramatically altered. I wanted to pay homage to the small but mighty bog turtle!
