ARTIST STATEMENT
The inspiration for this painting came from contemplating the death of a bird. I found a beautiful barn swallow dead on my porch. It intrigued me to paint it juxtaposed with a live bird with a loose string floating loosely between them. The scene encapsulates the connection between life and death in the ephemeral space of accreted encaustic paint and encrusted India ink in a cool, muted palette. While loss is inevitable, our ability to survive and move forward is captured in this. The circular movements of the line and texture imply energy, which is accented by the flying birds’ delicate details. Overall, the painting gives a feeling of carrying something intangible – both fragile and resilient.
