ARTIST STATEMENT
The morning of January 7th, I opened a news app, shocked to see that our government, under the guise of ICE, had just murdered a 37-year-old mother and wife, a member of the LGBTQ community, my community. For what? For trying to protect the new community she had come to love. My heart sank…so many feelings swirling in my brain, one more step lower in the depths of despair that our country had sunk to at the hands of a madman and so many angry men chosen to do his dirty work.
In my studio I tried to step away from the insanity for a few minutes. I couldn’t look away, I struggled to contain my anger. What ensued was a work shrouded in anguish and sadness. Inspired by that awful day for so many and feelings surrounding me for weeks after this and so many similar events…the senseless killings of human beings at the hands of evil and greed.
What began with an early morning photo of a barren tree standing alone in the marsh grass from the Bosque Del Apache, didn’t imply anything remotely resembling what had happened, it did however encapsulate my feelings of isolation, despair and anger at such hatred, racism and misogyny. The lone tree gave the feelings of disheartenment fuel while the color palette and glue burn emote feelings of the chaos and poisonous cruelty of our country. Still I hold hope that together “Good” will prevail and we will rise.
