ARTIST STATEMENT

My practice is driven by direct visual studies, a process that I believe aligns closely with the theme of inspiration. When creating a series of related paintings, the inspirational thread takes its course from a distinct beginning, progresses through a complex middle, and resolves in an integrated end. However, the energy of inspiration is always ongoing, constantly evolving regardless of the initial basis or fixed imagery of the piece. I am currently embarking on an exciting new phase of work that pushes the boundaries of my chosen medium of encaustic. This involves the incorporation of the vivid, electric quality of fluorescent encaustic paint directly into my signature encaustic landscapes. My proposed entry, titled “City Night,” is a direct reflection of this investigation. Through the use of fluorescent pigments in the wax, the work transforms, offering a dynamic study of light that is both palpable and elusive. While the subject matter—perhaps a hidden street corner, the glow of distant buildings, or the reflection on wet pavement—could be interpreted in a myriad of narrative ways, I prefer to leave the final story and emotional resonance to the viewer’s personal imagination. This deliberate ambiguity is a central component of my work, allowing the light and atmosphere to inspire a unique and private narrative for every individual who stands before it.
