ARTIST STATEMENT
As a gardener and artist, my work is driven by the understanding of nature as a vast, cooperative community, an idea profoundly shaped by the ecological research of Peter Wohlleben and Suzanne Simard. I explore the “Wood Wide Web”—the complex fungal networks and chemical signals that allow forests to function as interdependent systems rather than collections of solitary organisms. In my paintings, trees act as conduits for this exchange; I use deliberate mark-making and incised structures within the wax to render these invisible networks visible. Rather than depicting a literal landscape, I portray vibrant fields of energy flow to emphasize the reciprocity essential to an ecosystem. This work serves as a reminder that we are not separate from the natural world but participants within it, suggesting that our future depends on embracing the same resilience and interdependence found within the forest. This painting brings awareness to the “Mother Tree”, the oldest, largest tree that shares carbon, water, and nutrients to younger seedlings.
