Artist Statement:
The triptych, Earth Day Legacy, focused on positive images. Senator Nelson’s environmental advocacy should not be celebrated just on Earth Day but remain continuously in everyone’s mind. Our fragile home will not remain habitable unless the world works together to combat global warming. My 16” wooden circles symbolize the earth, our blue-water planet. The Scales of Justice represent ethical decisions, and interior circles represent Federal laws or ecology symbols.
Circle images were created by the submission artists or taken from Wikimedia Commons, Public Domain and Creative Commons-ShareAlike. Specific research on each image is available upon request. Separating the triptych into 1 or 2 artworks is also possible.
The first Earth Day Legacy image reminds viewers of the positive efforts made by President Nixon and Congress to expand Federal protection: Environmental Protection Agency (1970), Clean Air Act (1970), Clean Water Act (1972), Endangered Plant and Animal Species (1973) as well as the first Earth Day poster (1970).
The second Earth Day Legacy image urges audiences to remember affirmative efforts made by Senator Gaylord Nelson from the creation of Earth Day (1970) to advocating for environmental laws: Solar Energy Resources Act (1974), NOAA-Coastal Management Act (1972), Magnuson Stevens Act for fish conservation (1976-2007) and National Forest Management Act (1976). After Nelson left the Senate in 1980, government agencies such as the Energy Department promoted laws to combat global warming: Energy Policy Act for renewables and efficiency (1992-2005); Recovery Infrastructure Law for EV charging stations and clean energy incentives (2021-2022).
The third Earth image encourages observers to be optimistic about efforts made by international organizations to initiate environmental policies. (Even NASA does research on climate change from space.) Examples of international activities to prevent climate change are Earth Day went Global (1990), the United Nations Climate Change Paris Agreement (2019), the European Union’s Environmental Crime Directive (2024) and the United Nations Climate Change Conference -Conference of the Parties (Annually).
Also, recycling, and toxic waste management regulations made great strides after Earth Day: Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (1976-1984) the Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act “Superfund Regulation Act” (1980).
