Artist Statement:
New Delhi winter, 2016. Smog so dense that all fades to a ghostly gray. I’m at this artists retreat to work on a project about water pollution, a continuation of a project I had started in Florida about the degradation of that state’s natural springs. The Yamuna River is one of the world’s most polluted rivers. I am struck by how, in spite of the pollution, the trees survive and seem to thrive on the Sanskriti Kendra campus. I pick the leaves, documenting and then carefully pressing each between the pages of a book. Names like Tree of Sadness and Krishna’s Buttercup stir my imagination. Will the pollution, so prevalent in Third World countries become the fate of the entire world as global warming and its consequences continue to be ignored? In this piece, I juxtapose a pressed East Indian leaf with sunshine yellow: a sign of optimism in spite of growing evidence to the contrary.
