Artist Statement:

Every year we see and experience more and more extreme and dangerous weather conditions. Science has shown how much of this is a result of global warming.  I often think about how the small choices we make every day affect this situation.

For example, here in the Northeast, we use a great deal of water to keep our lawns green and gardens lush, even as we face growing droughts and shifting weather patterns.

A recent trip to Greece gave me a new perspective. I visited Stavros Niarchos Park in Athens, an innovative and beautiful, sustainable public garden filled with native Mediterranean plants—grasses, trees, and shrubs that thrive without extra water. Despite my usual preference for bold, saturated hues, this landscape of muted greens, warm browns, golden yellow, dusty pinks and lavender greatly surprised me with its stunning beauty.

This experience led to my Sustainable series of paintings, in which I explore the rich, understated tones of Mediterranean landscapes. These works reflect a shift in my own perception—and how I hope others might reconsider their own gardens, habits, or assumptions about beauty.

Artists have a powerful role to play in environmental awareness. Through our work, we can educate others and inspire change. We know from the example of Earth Day itself; even small creative efforts can grow into a much larger movement.
