Artist Statement:
Litter is directly linked to global warming as it causes an increase in greenhouse gas emissions and waste, disrupting ecosystems. Trash degrades over time into the environment or in landfills, releasing methane gas, microplastics, and other possible toxins into ambient air, land, and water. When burned, trash releases particulates that adversely affect air quality, contributing to climate change. My work for this exhibition addresses climate change by incorporating litter with wax and mixed media, bringing awareness to the ill effects of trash on the environment and on wildlife.
The work Red Drink, Green Drink is created using a discarded whiskey bottle and soft drink can, ensconced in crocheted copper wire koozies. Encaustic wax in red and green respectively are poured over the pieces, emphasizing a formal seal on lowly detritus.
It is my goal that viewers will look at trash in a more serious light, realizing the adverse effects it has on health and the environment.
