Artist Statement:

Resilience may begin with “a shift in thinking,” reframing and focusing on what still stands.

The work and its title depict abundance and freedom in our planet and lives. It gently invites viewers to visit and ponder the creation of Earth, returning to the original.

I have been developing my climate-themed series since 2022, including multiple pieces titled Resilience I, II, III…This new work reflects a shift in thinking and perspective.

I abstractly layer text from both ancient and contemporary elements as my style, and developed a new expression in this piece. In addition, I am portraying current issues surrounding planetary resources, such as oil. I intentionally employed tar around the edge as material language as well as natural sand from New Mexico and Japan.

All four sides of a cradled wood panel are treated with the traditional Japanese Shou-Sugi-Ban technique—burning the surface to create natural beauty, better preservation, and perseverance/resilience. I use this to remind us of resources, nature, wildfires, further connecting my process to resilience and environmental change.

Almost everything, including environmental challenges and policy measures, appears to carry a political dimension. However, I take a stand in my personal philosophy: not ‘an eye for an eye,’ but away from the gridlock. I channel this mindset into a vision for a brighter future with resilience, reverencing the Creator of the universe and proactively showing gratitude, and pouring out our love and care to nature and all creation.

Appreciation for existence itself.

Ultimately, my work explores hope.
