Artist Statement:

In the Southwest states of the U.S., there has been a depletion of groundwater. Some of this is due to evaporation, and some is due to agencies overpumping the water out of aquifers for usage in cities and farmlands.

In this painting, I bring a hopeful vision of a mesa that has had a break through in the limestone at the highest elevation. This break through creates what is known as a capstone plunge waterfall. The surplus water begins to drench the thirsty land below. As I made this encaustic painting, I kept some of the colors of dying or wilting vegetation at the bottom of the painting. It rests beside vibrant red and orange colors of wildflowers.

The resilience ushered in by the waterfall is about to happen. Soon the grasses and trees will green up. The busy and tumultuous sky is in a season of gathering up water to give away. I hope I captured the desolation the day before the plants and animals return to the new pool of water created in the lower third of the artwork. The Indian paintbrush flowers would have new vitality. It is the hope of survival to see water replenished.
